How to fix Mimosa cantilever umbrella that won't close?

My mimosa cantilever pool umbrella is stuck in the open position - teen opened it and now we can't get it closed. Winding won't do anything. Is there a way to get it down to stop damage in the wind?

It's possible that the pull cord has gotten stuck due to extreme tension applied to the winder. One way you can try to get it loose is to push the centre of the umbrella while turning the handle anticlockwise. If the cord starts to pull the umbrella, stop winding and turn it clockwise to release the tension. You can try winding in the opposite direction, your goal is to get tension in the cord. If the umbrella gets untangled, you'll feel the tug of the cord and see the correct response from the umbrella.

However, if after several attempts and the cord will not dislodge itself, I suggest engaging the services of a professional to disassemble your umbrella to reset the cord.
