How to fill and seal crumbling slate on pool edge?

The slate tiling around the edge of my pool is old and crumbling quite badly.

I have gone over it with Crommellin slate and stone sealer, but it doesn't seem to have made much difference.

What I really want is a way to glue down the loose edges and fill in some of the gaps. I was hoping someone could recommend some kind of mortar, or a clear epoxy that might do the job.

I have some leftover roof tile pointing that I thought might do the job but it probably wouldn't look very good. Especially since it's the wrong colour (terracotta).

Re: How to fill and seal crumbling slate on pool edge?

Hello @hdlynn

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about your slate tiles.

I'm afraid the damage to the slate surface is too severe and surface coating or sealing is not going to work. If water has entered the inner layers of the slate tile, it will only be a matter of time until they begin to crack and give way. At this point in time, I suggest thinking about replacing the slate tiles with another material. But if you are not prepared to replace the pool coping at this time, I propose removing the loose flakes to prevent it from going into your swimming pool.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.

Eric
