Hi, I'd like to extend our deck and make it level with the verandah. How far can you extend the bearers?
I'd basically like to extend the deck the full width of the verandah and make it 1m wider.
Can I add new timbers on top of the joists to bring the old section level?
Thanks.
Hello @Count_Zero
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thank you for sharing your question about extending your deck.
Your deck has been constructed to bear a certain amount of weight and a certain amount of stress in bad weather. Altering that balance could have undesirable consequences such as posts sinking, the deck leaning and undue stress placed on the frame of the deck causing it to buckle.
Looking at it from a construction point of view, I would recommend taking the deck apart and reassembling it with new posts so that it meets up with your verandah. As for the deck extension, I suggest building it as an independent structure with its own posts so that it does not place any stress on any part of your building.
But before you carry out any construction work, I suggest engaging the services of a registered deck builder to make sure that the build will be up to code and will pass local council inspection.
Let me call on our experienced members @Adam_W and @ProjectPete for their recommendations.
