How to build low-level deck over pavers?

Hello,

I am looking to start building a low-level covered deck on brick pavers and need someone help with below points-

Please note I am based in Perth.

The area is covered under colorbond roof and not exposed to direct sunlight or water.

I am looking at a L shape Decking arrangement.  I am still to work out the total length but was looking at Ekodeck 137 x 23mm boards with 70mm x 45mm H3 treated Pine as that is the minimum size i could find.

IMG_9598.JPGIMG_9599.JPGIMG_9603.JPG

1) The deck meets the house on two sides, one being 110mm clearance and the other 100mm, so I decided to keep the deck height to be flush with 100mm. To do so, I have decided to use 70*45 treated pine joists sitting on galvanised brackets with about 10mm ground clearence. Is the 70*45 joists good enough ? If not, what option do I have so my final deck height doesn't exceed 100mm?

2)Also there is a pool nearby could that be an issue.

3)Weep holes of bricks would get covered under the deck . Will that be an issue ?

4) Also there is some gap between wall and paver/s bricks which i was planning to fill with Gap Filler Rod  and Selleys 440g Sandstone No More Gaps Bricks And Mortar Gap Filler but will that block the weep holes and could that be an issue?  Note-  Pavers and bricks were just pressure cleaned and sealed yesterday.

Re: How to build low-level deck over pavers?

Hi @antrix_bansal,

Apologies for the delay in response.

Unfortunately, as you'll see in the Hyne Timber Bearer Span Table and Joist Span Tables, 70x45 is not able to be used as part of a raised decking frame.

Realistically, with your desired height and the location of the weep holes considered, the only way I could advise doing this is to remove the pavers and enough soil so that you can install the decking at the correct height.

It is never advisable to cover weep holes in your home, so the finished deck height should be below their height.

I'd be happy to work with you on a solution, but the only way I see this being possible is to remove the pavers.

Allow me to tag @Nailbag and @Dave-1 for their thoughts.

Let me know what you think.

Afternoon @antrix_bansal

When I was looking at your photos the rear door looks level with your pavers as is. Im not sure where your measurement for available space is coming from?

As @JacobZ has said "its never wise to cover weap holes" and I whole heartedly agree with him, theyare there for air circulation and covering them and changing what they can do will lead to issues down the track under your house or between the walls.

Removing your pavers and digging out is about the only way I can see for the decking you are asking about. The 10mm clearance is way to close to the ground for air circulation underneath the deck.

Now for some better news, Ikea have some decking timber tiles with a plastic backing that you could lay over the top of the pavers without adding much height overall. It could be a possibility. I have only walked on teh tiles in store at Ikea but considering how many people have walke dover them I suspect they are solid.

Ikea Outdoor Flooring shows you some examples.

One last thing as I go through your photos, whatever decking you decide you will need to factor in any water that makes its way under the roof and where it will end up. Also the height of the area from top of deck to roof height needs to be a minimun of 2.4m.

Hi @antrix_bansal

again as with @Dave-1 I am in agreeance with @JacobZ to remove the paver. The added and probably the most important advantage is that it will allow you to build the top finish height of the deck to the sliding door opening so there is not step.
