I’m doing an extension which will include an external entry door. I’m going with a timber door to reduce costs.
I’m using Yellowtongue flooring as a platform and building 70*45 stud walls.
I’ve got flashing details ok from your video but I’m not sure about the base of the door frame details including the timber sill (if it’s required).
Details including a sketch would be helpful.
Thanks
Chris
Hello @Ext54
Thanks for sharing your question about your external door project. Would it be possible for you to post a photo of your door frame including the floor? We will try to get more information for you regarding this matter. As soon as we know more info, we'll get back to you.
Thank you for your patience.
Eric
Hi Eric,
I’m in the process of doing the job so don’t have any photos available but I have made a drawing that I hope will help.
I’m not sure whether to put a door sill (if required) directly on top of the Yellowtongue Flooring or to cut out a piece of the flooring and put a sill on the floor joist. The combined thickness of the flooring and vinyl underlay is 24 mm so a sill would be quite high installed directly on the flooring. A weather seal on top of that would be very high.
I’ve done some research into available products but there seems to be very little about door sills.
Thanks
Chris
Hi @Ext54
Thank you for your patience. I was speaking to a team member who was more knowledgeable regarding the building processes in regards to exterior door installation.
In Australian residential buildings, entrance doors are generally required to have a threshold or sill, but the specifics can vary based on building codes, accessibility requirements and local regulations. I therefore suggest checking your local council's rules and regulations regarding the installation of entrance doors and sills.
The good news is that Hume Doors provide a door frame called the Weatherguard Frame. Premium energy efficient entry frames available in pine or meranti material as standard. (check your state). Merbau is an optional extra that is perfect for bushfire regulated homes. Weatherguard frames are manufactured with full perimeter seals for improved energy consumption and an anti-slip sill to help with slip hazards. I believe the door frame can be specially ordered as a custom size. Please note that the door itself is not included and must be ordered separately.
Observing the entrance to my rented home, they 've installed tiles over the concrete floor and goes straight outside. But as I've mentioned it's best to check the rules in your state or perhaps engage a local builder for this part of your project.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.
Eric
Hi Eric,
Thanks for that information, it’s what I am after, I didn’t know that Hume had that product. I’m pretty sure this will solve my problem.
Thanks again,
Chris
