How to build a wooden outdoor set?

Hi, i need some advise on my first project. I like to build my own outdoor set using wood that is safe to use. Now I read mixed info about using treated structural pine. Can someone pls advise me if this is a good option or just use normal pine and stain/paint it.

Thx a lot

Re: How to build a wooden outdoor set?

Hi @MaxN,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

When you say wooden outdoor set, do you mean outdoor furniture? Will it be exposed to the weather consistently? Will it be in direct contact with soil?

There are a few things that will come into play depending on the circumstances of what you are looking to build. Have a look at How to choose the right timber for the job for some guidance on the types of timber and their specific use.

Treated structural pine such as this 90 x 45mm Outdoor Framing H3 Treated Pine can be used outdoors without an additional coating as long as it is not in direct contact with the ground. It is treated against attack by decay fungi and insects, including termites.

Untreated pine is not a great option outdoors as even if it is well coated with a stain or paint, termites and boring insects can still find a way in.

Once you've provided some more details, I will be happy to assist further.

I want to make a safe outdoor seating. Also i read that treated pine could also be painted once dry?

Re: How to build a wooden outdoor set?

Hi @MaxN,

I thought so, I just wanted to double-check to make sure we were on the same page.

H3-treated structural pine is your best bet for outdoor seating. It is structurally rated so it can certainly support the weight of people when constructed correctly.

You can find more information about H3 structural pine in this information booklet produced by our supplier Hyne Timbers - Hyne T3 Green Brochure.

While H3 pine can be used outdoors, it can't be in direct contact with the ground, so raising it slightly with a plastic or metal foot will help prevent premature rot. These Richmond 50mm x M10 Fixed Levelling Feet would be a good option.

Yes, you are correct it can be painted once dry to improve the look and offer another layer of protection. Any exterior paint can be used with the right preparation.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
