Hi all, we have a retaining wallapprox 1m high and children can climb it and walk on top of it and pop down in our pool area. The original garden bed was full of hedging so it was hard to spot the issue until we cut back the planting. Just looking for ideas on making the wall compliant with pool safety regs. As you can see in the photos, the existing pool fence is approx 1.2m but stops at the retaining wall. The total length of the wall is approx 13m. One idea floated was a bamboo fence installed directly in front of the existing retaining wall. Thanks
You probably should consult a pool compliance company that are up to date on your local councils regulations.. they all have different regulations from council to council. But you would need proper pool fencing 1.2m high from any climbing point, not bamboo or any other fencing other than pool fencing. Your local council should be able to provide you their compliance regs regarding fencing.
Hello @jsteps79
Thanks for sharing your question about pool fence safety regulations. It's great that you've received excellent advice from @Marty_greenshed. I agree with their recommendation of engaging the services of a pool fencing specialist. Just to add to the suggestion made, I recommend asking the local council inspector to write up an inspection report so that you'll know exactly what their requirements are.
Nothing is more frustrating than having the inspector come over and ask you to modify the already modified fence. Having the report ahead of the modification will guarantee to a high degree that it will pass inspection.
Some of the possible modifications that come to mind are deterrents to prevent children from climbing and balancing on the high fence. Placing high solid timber fencing at the junction of the pool fence and the concrete fence. Aside from these, I'm sure the council inspector will be making more recommendations.
Please keep us updated with your progress, we look forward to seeing your updated pool fence.
If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Who owns the rest of the retaining wall @jsteps79? If it were 4 foot high all along kids couldn’t climb it and it would meet regulations
Or lift the last panel to 1.8 and extend it to the brush fence with an angle from the top of 1.8 … but it really needs to be something inclimbable from the top of that rock ledge tricky
Hi @jsteps79 … just wondering how you resolved this issue ? I will have similar issues 🙂
Hi @vonniedee
Let me tag @jsteps79 once more to make sure they are aware of your question. It would be good to get an update and find out how they solved the fencing issue.
