How to fix gate lock?

Hi Everyone,

My gate lock is not working properly, can only lock from inside.

I am hoping to fix it myself.Gate Lock.jpg

Is it an easy job to repair or replace a new one? Any tips to replace a new one will be appriciated.

Or do I really need to get gate people or locksmith to do it.

Thanks in advance.

When I put the key in and turn it around, it just does nothing.

Re: Gate Lock Repair / Replace

Hi @ShirleyL,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

It's great to see you've already had @J-P jump in to assist.

By the sounds of it, the locking mechanism has failed. This could be for a variety of reasons including springs losing tension, internal parts wearing down and overall wear and tear.

The simplest fix is to replace it with a new LokkLatch General Purpose Gate Latch. There's not much to it, you'll just need a drill with a phillips head bit to remove the old lock and install the new one. The instructions will show how to set things out and you may even be able to use the same screw holes.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: Gate Lock Repair / Replace

The ones I hav, the lock is meant to avoid you flipping the latch up to unlock gate. The key rotation doesn’t flip the latch up.

so if yours is same mechanism, that key rotation will only limit the ability to move latch up or locking it in place. Try moving the latch with both key positions. On the other side you will have a push button that will lock and unlock with key

Re: Gate Lock Repair / Replace

Hi J-P,

Thank you for the reply, and yes, mine is the same like yours. The lock stop the latch to release.

mine got key holes on both side, and when I use the key, one side can lock, but another side can’t.

I think is like JacobZ said something in it was broken.

Re: Gate Lock Repair / Replace

Hi Jacob,

Thanks for the reply.

I think I will need https://www.bunnings.com.au/lokklatch-deluxe-s3-gate-latch_p0336015 this one with key holes on both side.

I asked the locksmith to give me a quote for doing this job - $165 call out fee and $125 for the lock….so definitely want to try to do it myself!

Thank you. ^_^

Re: Gate Lock Repair / Replace

Hi @ShirleyL,

That looks like a great replacement as long as your posts and gate are at least 38mm thick.

Having a look at the installation manual, you're going to need a couple of extra tools to accommodate the connecting rods that go through the post. You'll need a drill, a 4mm drill bit, a 13mm drill bit, a phillips bit, a square and a hacksaw.

Let me know if you have any further questions along the way.
