Fencing ideas needed for tropical pool area

Hi DIY'ers,

I have some big plans for our outdoor area and we were considering a bamboo fence around the pool to create a tropical feel (we would have a glass fence going into the pool area. We would them plan lovely tropical plants in front of the fence. I have heard that bamboo fences are quite brittle and may not last. Does anyone have any experience with this?

We aren't keen on a metal fence and wanted something different to your standard fence around the exterior of the pool so any other ideas are welcome.

Re: I need fencing ideas

Hey @Renowayoflife ,

Bamboo is durable but it fades quickly without care. I notice you posted three weeks ago  that you visited a Bunnings to grab some glass panels for around your pool, is that glass for the whole thing or does your pool back onto a fence and you're thinking about replacing / covering that back fence with Bamboo?

I notice that you love lots of plants, hedges and vines in your posts, why not save money by building a basic fence, painting it a darker colour and then planting something like Lilly pilly as a hedge or Hardenbergia as a climber in front of it, the green would contrast well on the darker colour and would help bring some green to your pool area?

If we could see the space we're working with we can get a better idea of the area.

Re: I need fencing ideas

That's actually a great idea, we had thought about using a simple fence but we were thinking the bamboo would be more tropical. I am planning a live wall on one section and tropical plants in front of the other so you're right, the cost saving makes sense

We did get some glass panels as we plan to use glass across one section and then we have the neighbours fence we want to cover for privacy as he's just taken his fence down without even letting us know and he's a little problematic - if I'm being nice 😉

Thanks for your input!

Re: I need fencing ideas

That thicker bamboo panel should last for a considerable amount of time @Renowayoflife. I guess it comes down to your expectations on how long you think it should last. I think you'll find the cord the pieces are bound with will decay before the bamboo does; I'd expect at least a five-year lifespan. Typically, the thinner split bamboo can become a bit brittle after a few years. Also, the reeded products can sometimes start breaking down around this time too.

I'm keen to see a diagram showing what fences will be governed by pool compliance codes. Obviously, if any of these fences are barriers to the pool, you'll need to consider their suitability. Also, you should consider whether any planting you're thinking about now will become a climable hazard in the future.
