What timber for outdoor kitchen?

IMG_3856.jpeg

Hi Community,

we are currently building an external kitchen and seating area. The frame has all been built out of H3 70x35 wood and is getting cladded with PVC slats.

for the seating area we will have a lid and then a short dwarf backing along the whole way.

What type of wood is best used for this? I have tried to find something like external MDF or plywood but could not find anything. The whole kitchen is covered under a Bali hut but is external and does get wet if it rains.

thanks

Re: External MDF

Hello @aledlloyd123

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your external kitchen seating area.

I suggest either using an 1800 x 600 x 18mm Merbau Multi-Use Panel or you can join SpecRite 90 x 19mm Merbau Pre-Oiled Decking - Random Lengths to create a flat surface to serve as cover for your seating. Please note that the pre-oiled decking pieces must be washed or seasoned first to prevent staining the inside of your seating area. The only other timber that I would suggest would be marine plywood as it is designed for outdoor use.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @Nailbag for their recommendations.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: External MDF

Good Evening @aledlloyd123

An outside kitchen would be a very handy thing to have

I have a bench and also built myself an outside bench seat that is still going strong 10 months ish later  Its due for a re0-oil but really it hasnt faded from when it was built. So my Suggestion is go for a hardwood such as Merbau or yellow gum (some Bunnings have some some dont so best to check your local couple of stores if you are lucky )

Outside timber lounge with wheels  Is my project, and it still rolls easily  Its outside, gets rained on much like yours would and stands up well.

Re: External MDF

Hi @aledlloyd123

If your after a slated deck style finish then merbau or spotted gum for an even nicer look.  Marine ply is your best for a continuous finish.
