Hi there, looking into painting this exterior yellow brickwork. The house was built in 1976, and while the mortar isn't disintegrating, I just wanted to confirm whether I should re-point it anyway before painting, or if it's unnecessary.
Thank you!
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Sebastian90. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about repointing brickwork.
The only reasons you'd repoint the brick is if the mortar was disintegrating and needed repair or you're trying to achieve a smooth finish to the wall. Your mortar appears fine, and if you wanted a smooth finish, rendering would likely be a more feasible solution.
I can't see a reason to repoint before you paint. Here's a helpful guide: How to paint your house's exterior. Picking up a budget-friendly spray gun will save you a ton of work trying to paint those sunken mortar lines.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
