Do i need to sand my desk before oiling it?

“It’s been a year since we had our deck installed, but it’s starting to look worn out. Could anyone suggest the best ways to restore its shine and make it look new again? Any tips or recommended products would be greatly appreciated!”

Re: Do i need to sand my desk before oiling it?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @vinoth. It's splendid to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about rejuvenating a deck.

It looks like your deck is showing signs of wear. Sanding the rough, affected areas or the entire deck would be the best way to restore its smooth surface and prepare it for re-oiling. If the coating has deteriorated significantly in the past 12 months, it may be a good idea to implement a six-monthly maintenance coat to prevent this issue from reoccurring.

Once the deck has been sanded, you can follow a step-by-step guide: How to oil your deck

First, clean the deck by sweeping and removing any dirt, dust, or debris. A deck cleaner will help remove grime or mould. After flushing the cleaner off with fresh water and allowing the deck to dry entirely, you can apply a high-quality deck oil suitable for your deck’s wood type. Allow the oil to dry completely, typically for about 24 hours, and avoid heavy foot traffic until it’s fully dry. This process will help restore your deck’s appearance and keep it looking great for months to come.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
