Decking - Joist space

Decking - Joist space

We recently had a builder come build a deck. He spaced the joist 1m apart - it is a low level deck. The deck is 7m long 3m  wide. Is this enough spacing? Pine wood was used 90mm x 45mm. Will the hybrid timber flex?

Re: Decking - Joist space

Hi @Eli2,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

I suggest quickly reviewing How to understand deck components and How to understand deck span tables.

If you are referring to the distance that the joists span, then 1m is within the limitations of 90x45 MGP10 Pine, however, if the joists are spaced 1m apart, then this is not up to standard.

A decking board, which runs perpendicular and is supported by a joist, can span 450mm. If the joists are spaced 1m apart, the decking boards will not be adequately supported, and the deck will be bouncy.

Just to clarify what you mean by the joists being spaced 1m apart, is it possible to get a photo of the deck so I can offer my best advice?

Let me know if you need a hand uploading images. I'm happy to help if required.

Jacob
