DIY backyard golf putting green
DIY Backyard Golf Putting Green - start to finish in 1 weekend!
The back corner of the backyard was never used, grew mostly weeds and was overgrown with tree branches. Until we decided, let's put in a putting green! We spent a week researching, watching A LOT of YouTube videos on how to create a backyard putting green, measuring and planning out the space and putting green shape and ordering the supplies we needed for the putting green project. We started and completed the project in 2 days over the weekend.
Here's how we did it and what we used:
- Started with digging out all the soil and grass to get a level and clean soil surface.
- Raked and levelled the ground.
- Rented a compacter from Bunnings and compacted the native soil.
- Installed the Corten steel edging for the area. The Corten will naturally weather with a rust-look. (Purchased from a local steel fabricator)
- Wheel barrowed in 3 tonne of road base/crushed rock (ordered from local garden supplier). The two of us simultaneously shovelled each wheelbarrow load, raked and spread it. I think this was the most physically painful and tiring job of our whole house reno!
- Used the compactor to compact the road base. This took around 4 passes of the area and 2 hours of compacting to achieve a flat surface.
- Spread sand over the whole compacted road base and rolled over with a turf roller. (Bastion 20kg River Sand from Bunnings)
- Cut the putting surface to shape and marked out the cup holes. (Putting surface and green fringe ordered from golf green supplier)
- Dug the cup holes and concreted the cups in. (Builders 20kg Concrete Mix from Bunnings)
- Cut the holes into the putting surface.
- Cut the artificial grass fringe surface and tacked down the edges around the perimeter edging and the putting green surface. (We used a few hundred long nails/pins - similar to what would be used for laying artificial grass). (Tuff Turf Synthetic Turf Anchor Nails from Bunnings)
- Top dressed the putting green with silica sand.
- Ran the wiring and installed 8 'Holman Garden Spotlights from Bunnings' around edging under the Pittosporum trees.

Love this @homeinmelbourne!
We've had some popular mini-golf projects on the site but your putting green is next level.
Thanks for sharing plenty of detail so others inspired by your creation can replicate your handiwork.

Re: DIY backyard golf putting green
Excellent result. I was impressed by the amount of planned detailed work you put in, including (very sensibly) doing the research first. And now you get to enjoy using that corner, day or night.

Re: DIY backyard golf putting green
Thank you very much for sharing pictures and the steps you took to build this fantastic putting green. Among the projects you've shared, this is the one I'm very keen to have a go at. What is the overall size of the putting green and what kind of budget would you set aside for this kind of project?

Re: DIY backyard golf putting green
Impressive!
Could be my eyes or the camera angle - but is there a steep slope down to the green?
I like the 'Corten steel edging' with the serrated bottom - haven't seen that before...

Re: DIY backyard golf putting green
Thank you @EricL, we budgeted $1500 for the project and here is a photo of the size/dimensions of the putting green.

Re: DIY backyard golf putting green
Thanks for your comment @Noyade!
No there is no slope down - it might just be the camera angle. Originally the far corner of the triangle area was higher but we dug out about 2 cubic metres of soil to level it out with the rest of the backyard.
