Max and his dad created this large custom-built insulated shed for their D.I.Y. projects. It was the winner of best outdoor project in our 2024 search for New Zealand's best D.I.Y. projects.
The project
We needed a shed for my special needs son Max and I to build planter boxes, and for other projects. The quotes to have the shed built professionally were way over our budget so we decided to do the job ourselves.
The steps
Step 1
Concept design.
Step 2
Clear box and pour concrete pad.
Step 3
Build and erect framing. Prepare beams and ceiling panels - easier than painting them when they’re up!
Step 4
Install beams, ceiling panels, purlins, insulation, building paper and Colorsteel roofing.

Step 5
Cover frame with building paper and install cladding.
Step 6
Install windows and ranch slider.
Step 7
Instlal insulation, line walls with gyp and building adhesive.
Step 8
Install power points and lights. Paint interior walls. Frame windows internally and externally. Install guttering.
Step 9
Finishing touches such as shelving and the shed is operational!

Good Morning @geoffc005
I saw the thumbnail of your poject yesterday and came looking for it today, definently glad that I did. Thats a beautiful well thought out and built shed!
Loving the windows and also those triangular ones at the back. Thats a nice touch.
The insulation is brilliant! How is it holding up to winter and summer and whereabouts are you?
A project I will keep in mind for my yard!

Hi @Dave-1 Glad you like the shed. It’s spring here in Auckland and inside the shed has been very comfortable through the winter - the insulation is working really well.
