Can you use a Merbau panel for a ute tray?

Hi there - i'm planning on using the Merbau 2200x600x26 panels to replace the existing timber tray base on my ute. Will these panels be weather proof and will the A-Grade glue deteriorate over time?

Re: Using Merbau Panel for Ute Tray

Hi @Giufa,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

These panels are going to be naturally somewhat weather-resistant as they are hardwood, but they're probably not your best option as they are laminated horizontally, meaning the glue lines are exposed to water and damage if they are used as a tray liner. They are also an expensive option for something that is likely going to get beat up fairly quickly.

My suggestion which I have seen countless tradies use over the years is Formply. It is relatively cheap, very solid and comes pre-coated in a waterproof coating. You can cut it to size and paint the edges to seal them.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob
