Can you paint directly over Specrite pre-oiled gate?

can you paint directly over these Specrite oiled gates? Or need a full sand down? These seem like the product I need but not the correct colour.

Re: can you paint directly over these? Specrite Gate

Hello @j23

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about the Specrite gates.

The SpecRite 1833 x 900mm Pre-Oiled Merbau Horizontal Slat Gate can't be painted without the oil coating being removed. You can either wait for the gate to season 8 to 12 weeks which will naturally wear away the oil coating. When the oil coating wears away you can then sand the surface and paint over it. But if you wish to paint over it immediately, you'll need to sand the oil coating off with a 120grit sandpaper. Once you've sanded the gate back to wood you can then paint the surface.

If you have any other questions awe can help with, please let us know.

Eric
