Hi Bunnings Team,
I would love some advice please on what is the best option and process for building my own gate. The space I am working with is approx. 500mm by 2-2.2m high between two walls (Already installed wooden fixed rails/posts). My current idea is to use either the Rapid Fence Gate Kit or Fortress Gate products and cut to size to build my steel gate frame and then attach wooden pickets etc.
- Can you please provide some advice on if both or either is better for the space mentioned and would be better suited to cutting to size or custom etc.? Preference is to not have to cut at all, however if I do need to cut could I use a saw?
Edit: I have now bought a Fortress Gate (1850mm) and 3 x 1M bars to fit and cut. Please still advise on above.
- Once I have my steel frame what is the best way to fasten my wooden pickets to it?
- I plan to leave no gap between pickets to ensure privacy. Is there any issues with that?
- Any recommendations on gate latches/locks? How should I attach it?
Thanks!
Simeon
Hello @Simeon1
If you are using SpecRite 90 x 19mm Merbau Pre-Oiled Decking - Random Lengths - 90mm, I propose leaving a gap of 3mm for timber expansion. I recommend the same gap if you choose 100 x 16mm Fence Paling H3 Treated Pine Wet 2.1m. Installing the side by side is not recommended because when the timber expands it will cause the timber to cup and ruin its profile. To cut the timber I suggest using a Trojan 360mm Toolbox Hand Saw. To cut the steel, I suggest using a Trojan 300mm Tubular Hack Saw.
Here is a link to the Fortress Steel Gate Kit installation brochure: Fortress Gate Frame
Below is an image of how the timber pieces are screwed onto the steel frame.
