Advice needed on repairing celing outside toilet

Hello fellow renoers!

The tin off our outdoor toilet area came off, and the plasterboard was filled with water and collapsed. The insurance company said no builder wants the job, so we are planning to give it a go ourselves. Can anyone recommend what we should do here?

Should we simply put plasterboard up again, or is there something we should put between the tin and plasterboard to protect it in case rain gets in?

Any advice or tips would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Re: Advice needed on repairing celing outside toilet

Hi @ebonyelise0706,

If the tin roof is properly re-installed and flashing is used to prevent water ingress, then you can safely replace the ceiling with plasterboard. The key is ensuring the roof is watertight to avoid future issues. However, if there’s any chance of rainwater seeping in again, it would be better to use HardieFlex sheeting instead of plasterboard. This material is more moisture-resistant and would perform better in outdoor or semi-exposed conditions.

Focus on ensuring the roof is weatherproof, as there’s no effective barrier you can add between the tin and plasterboard to protect against water ingress.

If your home was built before the 1990s, be cautious of asbestos in the old ceiling material. Asbestos was commonly used in construction and can pose serious health risks if disturbed. Consider having the area tested by a professional before starting any repairs.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
