wooden window repairment

We have a piece of window falls down and wonder if it can still be repaired. Try not to replace with a new window to keep it looks consistent with other old windows. Noticed that the hinge has actually been replaced before.

Re: wooden window repairment

Hi @wondersky

Happy new year,

that looks like weak timber  there as well as the screws pulling out

If I owned that frame I would cut off about 35mm of the hinge side timber  and screw and glue  a replacement bit and re chisel in new hinge cut outs .

But   Builders  bog  may suit you easier. you may have too pre drill small 1mm pilot holes into the hardened  bog

Bog is a hard epoxy that replaces damaged wood sow screws can be used again.

There is a complete kit if this helps or you can  buy builders bog seperately.

Re: wooden window repairment

Hi @wondersky,

It looks like the timber window frame has a significant crack through it's thickness, and while it's possible to repair it, there are a few factors to consider. Since the crack is running through the thickness of the frame, it can be tricky to repair properly. You could try gluing the crack back together with wood glue, clamping it tightly, and then using screws from both the front and back of the frame to mechanically hold it in place. This might help restore some stability, but it may not be a long-term solution.

However, given that the window hinge has already been replaced once, it's possible that the frame has been under stress or may have deteriorated over time. When you remove the paint, there might be rot in the timber window frame that could be making the frame weaker. I would strongly recommend further investigation to check for any signs of rot or other structural issues before proceeding with the repair.

If you find that the timber is too damaged, it might be worth considering replacing only the affected sections of the frame to maintain the consistency of the window. This could preserve the look without the need for a full window replacement.

Please let us know if you have further questions.

Mitchell
