chalk paint top coat

Hi I sanded back a pine table used 2 x coats white chalk paint, then used the recommended top coat (luckily a test patch) it has gone yellow. I can repaint over that with the chalk paint but what can I use to seal it without it going yellow. Thanks

Re: chalk paint top coat

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @teegees. It's lovely to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about chalk paints.

Could you let me know if these products were purchased through us and what they were? This will help me identify whether the top coat used is the one recommended for our chalk paint range. Typically, the top coats we offer for chalk paints should not yellow the finish. For example, the Rustoleum chalk paints are designed to be coated with the Rust-Oleum 887ml Clear Matt Chalked Protective Topcoat. If they were our products, we can investigate further to ensure everything works as intended.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: chalk paint top coat

Hi @teegees,

There are normally only two reasons why the coatings would yellow. The first is that there was a stain on the pine timber, which bled through. Sometimes, these stains don't bleed through until the topcoat clear is applied. The other reason is that the top coat was clear and applied in a coating that was too thick. The clear has a yellow tinge to it, so only a thin coat for protection should be applied.

If there were residual stains left on the pine, then it would be a case of needing to sand the chalk paint off and apply Zinsser B-I-N Primer Sealer Stain Killer - White. You could potentially apply it over the chalked paint, but adhesion would be a concern. It's best to apply it over the timber.

You might like to do another test section with a thinner coat of the protective clear to see if that was the issue.
