Window air conditioning install (on a budget)

Summer is almost apon us and our Son's room in the new house appears to be the warmest (a gaming PC doesn't help), a non-permanent installation window mounted A/C was chosen as the easiest for a single room solution.

Construction is a straight forward horizontal H or ladder frame using 30x30mm pine selected to fit into the existing window channelling (as can be seen in the below image)

To enclose the H-ladder frame wooden slats were added, whatever is on hand is always convenient for last minute weekend builds and in this case I only had rough sawn pine (this will later be swapped out for something more aesthically pleasing as renovations continue and surplus timber becomes available).

Externally the A/C unit is supported by slotted angle steel of the type used to build shelving units, an additional 50mm length galvanised steel strap is used to complete the supporting frame (as seen in the image below).

Stainless steel hardware is used to secure the framing with 50mm bolts transferring the supportive weight to the wooden H-ladder frame, no additional screws/bolts were required to mount into the window frame and as such leaves no permanent damage (perfect for rental properties).

Weather sealing against drafts was achieved initially with adhesive cloth (Gaffa) tape at the joint surfaces but an additional strip of adhesive foam tape seal (door seal tape) will be necessary, total project cost came in under $50 with the only consideration on completion being low head profile bolts should have been used instead to increase clearance tolerances.

The front facing H-frame could either be enclosed further OR adapted to be additional shelving depending on the Residents requirements.

Nice work @DIYGnome.

I'm sure your son will be appreciative of your efforts with the warm weather we're expecting this Summer.

To get everything installed and working as intended for under $50 is brilliant.

Thank you for sharing.

Jacob

Re: Window air conditioning install (on a budget)

To be fair I didn't factor in the cost of the A/C unit (just the framing materials), these can however be sourced online for around $370 for a compact 1.7Kw version.
