Removing stripped screws - HELP

Hi HiveMind

I am redoing all my doors much like the Bunnings video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y8HsanUm9qA and as part of that process remove the door knobs and hinges (to be replaced with fancy brassy ones). All going well until I got to the second door!

The screws were in SO tight that I stripped the screw heads (which were partially damaged already). I've tried some manual methods such as prying them out (knowing I could fix any damage to the door itself - only slight movement), hammering the actual hinge out (with the hope the screws would come with it - nope. But the hinge did come off so I have more screw length to play with), WD40 and a pair of pliers - nope, trying a rubber band and a screw driver, trying a standard screw driver in the hole - all no luck. I bought a screw removal kit (you can see in the pic with a removed screw which is the same as the stuck ones). I didn't have the screw with me and feel like the removal kit may be too gig for the screw? I tried drilling with the supplied drill bit into the screw but the bit won't turn. I could be compounding the error with incorrect settings on my drill but did a test drill on a bit of wood and seemed okay. Help! Evening @DIYHaveaCrack

"WD40 and a pair of pliers"

You have a lotta screw head showing.

I just performed some 'live trials' with an old speed wrench and fencing pliers.

Fencing pliers hands down the winner - tremendous crushing force and then turn.

If you try this and the screw fractures - then you were never gonna get it out.

Keep us informed!

Cheers!

Re: Removing stripped screws - HELP

Hello @DIYHaveaCrack

Since you've explored most of the suggestions I was going to make, I recommend giving @Noyade's screw removal process a go. The store has a similar tool such as the IRWIN 260mm Vise-Grip Fencing Pliers. A possible alternative to the speed pliers is the Trojan 250mm Locking Pliers. But if you happen to have the same tool as Noyade's, that would be the more preferrable tool to use in this situation.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
