Our boys had outgrown their old rooms. We wanted to create a new fun room with their favourite characters.
Both rooms were mirror imaged to one another.
Materials used for each room:
Five sheets of MDF 2400x1200x16mm
Gorilla Glue
8Gx25mm wood screws
25mm brad nails
White Dulux Paint
Dulux Clear semi gloss
5mt LED RGB strip lightning
Wood filler
Sandpaper 240g Orbital
Tools used in both rooms:
Circular Saw
Vacuum
Brad Nailer
countersink bit
Cordless 18v Drill
Cordless 18v Impact Driver
tape measure
set square
1200mm clamps
600mm clamps
Orbital Sander
paint rollers
Step one was to measure and draw up the plans and work out how many sheets of MDF we required for the each room.
Picked up our materials from our local Bunnings store.
Started to cut the MDF to the measurements we had drawn up, so we had all the cut pieces required ready to assemble.
Started to assemble in the garage the first bedroom used glue to glue up all the required sections. Used the air compressor with brad nailer to fix the shelving units to the backing and sides. With a set square to ensure all the levels are even. Putty all brad nails. Sanded after putty dried with 240g Orbital.
Primed the shelving units and the bulk heads. Painted them in Dulux White paint once the primer was dried.
Measured, cut and installed timber battens on the upright of the wall to timber studs, we used the french cleat method. Used 100mm wide onto the wall and 50mm onto the back of the bulk head. Then install the RGB LED lighting trip to the edge. We recessed the LED back 70mm from the end finished size off the units to give a hallow glow once everything was installed
turned on.
Installed the shelving units against the battens with screws and levelled (did not take pictures during these steps)
Installed the bulk head ono the french cleat onto the wall. Screwed off the bulk head on either side to give extra support.
The final stage touch up any paint where required and final stage of setting up their decor in their rooms.
Hi @Lmassih,
What an incredible transformation! The attention to detail and work you’ve put into creating these fun and functional spaces for your boys is impressive. From the custom shelving to the recessed LED lighting, it’s clear a lot of thought went into every step.
The final result looks amazing, and I’m sure the kids are absolutely thrilled with their new rooms. Great job, and many thanks for sharing!
Mitchell
