How to repair a gap in the cornice from old wardrobe removal?

We recently removed our built in wardrobes leaving a gal in the cornice. I need to fill this before it gets painted. 

Any tips on how best to do this?

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @almostfinished. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about filling a gap in cornice.

You have a couple of effective options. One method is to glue a small block of timber into the gap to provide a solid backing for the filler. Alternatively, you could use expanding foam to fill the void, which will also provide a backing for the plaster filler. 

Once the void is filled, apply plaster filler over the foam or timber until it is flush with the surrounding cornice. You can also extend the filler slightly onto the adjacent cornices to create a smoother transition. To help bridge the gap, you may want to place a strip of plaster tape over the filler before it dries, which will prevent cracking. After the filler has dried completely, sand it down to ensure a smooth, flush transition between the two lengths of cornice.
