I have a box that was hand made for me in the late 70's. It's good quality timber that was stained when made. I want to modernise it by painting it. Advice on how to prepare and paint it would be appreciated.

Hi @Marg1962,
Your timber box looks to be in good condition. It appears that it would only need light sand with 240-grit sandpaper, and then it can be coated with a specialised primer. Once the primer is dry you'll be able to topcoat with an enamel paint. My preference would be to go with a water-based enamel due to ease of application and cleanup.
I'd suggest using a short nap roller for the best results and to avoid brush strokes.
