How to make a tiled coffee table?

Hello! I am working off the Bunnings DIY project 'How to create a tiled table' and I was just hoping to ask a couple of questions.

  • If I want to increase the size of the table (so it's more of a wide, low coffee table), should I add some kind of bracing, to help the wood cope with the weight of the tiles?
  • Should the plywood primer be something that helps stop any moisture from the tile adhesive sinking into the wood (and causing warping/rotting)?
  • And finally, if I wanted to add low legs (maybe something like this) do I need to consider a thicker wood to begin with? (At the moment the plywood is 12mm deep).

Hopefully that makes sense, any advice is appreciated, I'm a DIY beginner!

Thanks,
Kate

Re: Beginner DIY - making a tiled coffee table

Hi @katep1,

That's totally understandable.

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help along the way.

Re: Beginner DIY - making a tiled coffee table

Hi @JacobZ!

Well, I've successfully used a circular saw for the first time haha, and have some nicely cut timber! However, I'm now stumped with the screws.

I bought timber screws, enough to embed maybe 15-20mm in the wood, and drilled a long and decent-sized pilot hole, but my screws are getting stuck (I think as they meet the second bit of timber), and now they won't budge in any direction. (I also glued the wood together beforehand).

Would you be able to steer me in the right direction? Am I missing something really obvious here?

Thanks,
Kate

Re: Beginner DIY - making a tiled coffee table

Hello @katep1

If your screws keep getting stuck it might be necessary to use the next size up in regards to the drill bit. Please keep in mind that the drill bit must not be bigger than the body of the screw otherwise it will not anchor properly. Make sure to drill both pieces of wood and drill deeply. Make sure to push the frame to the wall so that you have leverage when screwing into frame.
