How to install MDF VJ paneling & feature walls on plastered brick?

Hi everyone,

I’m planning a DIY project to create feature walls in my home using MDF floor skirting, VJ paneling, MDF design walls, or ply feature walls. My walls are plastered brick, not gyprock or drywall, and I’m a bit unsure about the best method to attach these materials securely.

Most tutorials I’ve found online are for gyprock walls, which is not helpful for my situation. I’m based in Western Australia, so I’d love advice relevant to our materials and climate.

Here are my questions:

1. What’s the best way to adhere MDF or plywood to plastered brick walls? Should I use Liquid Nails or another masonry adhesive?
2. Should I reinforce the adhesive with screws or nails? If so, what type (e.g., masonry screws, nail gun, etc.)?
3. Are there specific products or techniques that work particularly well for this kind of project?
4. If you’ve done something similar, do you have tips for ensuring a neat and durable finish?
5. Please tag the products that you have used?

I’d greatly appreciate any advice or recommendations for tools, products, or methods that would work for plastered brick walls. Photos or links to tutorials would also be super helpful!

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about installing VJ panelling to your wall.

Attaching MDF, plywood, or VJ paneling to plastered brick walls can create stunning feature walls, and the right approach ensures a secure and durable finish. To adhere these materials, you can use Liquid Nails Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive, available at the store, as it is designed for a strong bond on masonry and timber surfaces. Apply the adhesive in a zigzag pattern on the back of each panel and press it firmly against the wall. 

However, for added security, especially for heavier panels like MDF, reinforcing with screws is recommended.

For reinforcement, Ramset Masonry Anchor Screws are a great choice. These screws are designed for brick and masonry and can be installed without wall plugs. To use them, drill pilot holes through the panel and into the plastered brick using a masonry drill bit. Be sure to countersink the screws slightly so they sit flush with the panel's surface, allowing for a smooth finish.

For tools, a Makita Cordless Hammer Drill and a Craftright Countersink Drill Bit Set will make the job easier and ensure precision. To achieve a neat and durable finish, fill any gaps or screw holes with a suitable filler, such as Selleys No More Gaps Multi-Purpose Gap Filler, which can be sanded and painted over once dry. If you're using VJ panelling or creating a design with MDF strips, measure and cut your panels carefully using a Ryobi Circular Saw or Ozito Multi-Tool for intricate cuts.

Finally, ensure you prep the plastered brick wall by cleaning it thoroughly to remove dust or loose paint. A coat of Zinsser Bulls Eye 1-2-3 Primer will help seal the wall and ensure good adhesion for the adhesive and panels. 

For painting your finished feature wall, Dulux Wash&Wear Low Sheen or a satin finish works well for a sleek, professional look. With careful preparation and the right tools from the store, your feature walls will look incredible and last for years to come.
