How to drill a 60mm hole in rubberwood without destroying battery on ryobi drill

I recently purchased the holesaw set as recommended by Bunnings staff for drilling a hole in a timber desk. I turned the torque up high but the drill doesn’t seem to go through the timber well and has destroyed the battery on my Ryobi battery drill (2Ahr). I’m not sure where I have gone wrong. Do I need to run it slower?

"drilling a hole in a timber desk"

Afternoon @HandyBird

What thickness and type of wood?

The kit gets a poor rating - but it should work. You mentioned wanting a 60mm hole but the kit's smallest diameter is 67mm?

Otherwise I would recommend Sutton brand.

Destroyed the battery - of drained it quickly?

My only experience with wood and hole-saws is with a drill press and high torque, low speed 240V spade drills.

Always low speed. Go slow.

Regularly withdraw the hole-saw - and clean the wood off between the teeth.

Around the halfway mark - drill from the other side for a cleaner finish.

I heartily recommend Ozito's inexpensive spade drill.

Let us know how you get on. Cheers.

Hi thanks for the tips. Went slow and withdrew regularly and eventually got through! And yes I went the 67mm hole because I didn’t have a drill attachment to buy just a hole saw so got the kit. Hadn't thought of a spade bit. Perhaps that would have made lighter work of it

Glad you now have a new hole! 😁

Is this for cabling?

A photo of the finished desk please - at your leisure.

Cheers!
