Drilling holes for curtain rod

Hi All,

I need to drill 3 sets of holes for hanging curtain roads (lightweight ikea rods) on top of my outdoor sliding doors as shown in the picture.. on the left side there is a drywall and I have screws with wall anchors for those (they can take 15kgs so it should be fine.. on top of the sliding doors and on the right side there are solid brick walls on the outside.. I’m not exactly sure what’s the material on top, if it’s wood or gyprock.

what would be the best way for drilling into the middle and right side ?? Can I use the same drill ? And what screws / plugs would I need ? Can I reuse the anchor screws in the pics attached ?

another small thing to note there is a gas outlet on the bottom right wall on the outside… but I’m assuming those pipes would not be running from the top of the sliding doors.. please correct me if I’m wrong.

Re: Drilling holes for curtain rod

Hello @AarKay

Thanks for sharing your question about drilling holes for your curtain rod. I suggest doing a bit of testing for the middle section, using a small ordinary drill bit, I propose drilling into the middle section where you plan to anchor a curtain rod post. If the drill encounters brick or wood, you'll be able to tell from the drilling dust that will come out. You'll also be able to tell if the there is an empty gap in that section as the drill will not encounter any resistance.

For the right-hand side, I would err on the side of caution and contact a local gas fitter to make sure there are no copper pipes running along that side of the wall. The last thing you want to happen is to accidentally drill into a gas copper pipe. Once you've confirmed that it is safe to drill in that section, I suggest using a good masonry drill bit and using Ramset 6 x 38mm Universal Anchor - 6 Pack. This screw set will work on all substrates including brick.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Eric
