Bedroom feature wall using stencils

Part of my bedroom transformation was to create a unique feature wall. All made with plasterboard, joint compound, stencils, paint and timber.

Materials

Plasterboard

Dunlop FC Jointing Compound

Stencils

Dulux Paint

Cabots Interior Stain Walnut

90 x 90 recycled timber

Recycled fence panel timber

Liquid Nails

Dynabolts

Tools

Dewalt Mitre saw

Bandsaw

Drill

Mini Rollers

Paintbrushes

Cloths

Steps

Step 1

The 'before' photo.  This room was extremely dull, but also problematic.  I'd been trying to come up with something for a while, with issues being that the walls were very uneven with rough plaster, and the vaulted wall wasn't vaulted centrally.

Step 2

First thing to do was to make the uneven vaulted issue 'disappear' by painting the upper part of the wall dark as a backdrop to the panelling.

Step 3

Then it was time to overcome the rough uneven walls that wouldn't lend themselves to stencilling, but liquid-nailing 3 plasterboard panels to the wall - leaving space between each one for a timber surround.

Step 4

Now the fun part!  I had a selection of stencils that I used along with Jointing Compound to make a patterned/textured design that would also withstand a bit of sanding and painting.

Step 5

Then a coat of a base colour over all the panels and stenciling.

Step 6

Although I don't have lots of photos of the next bit, I used some dark watery paint to wash over the base colour, then wiped a lot of it off with cloths so it highlighted the pattern more.  Then I added touches of subtle yellows and reds to create more different tones.

Step 7

I made some decorative wooden corners just stop it looking so square, and then added the timber framing.  You can also see that I painted the bedroom furniture to match the new colour-scheme

Step 8

Putting it all together with finishing touches.
