How to waterproof splashback?

176AB7AE-2A90-4B20-B954-D41B3A56796C.jpeg

Hi, we are updating our kitchen and have just replastered the splashback. I had planned to put up aquacheck boards but miscommunication with contractor has left us with regular plasterboard.

It’s my understanding that waterproofing isn’t required for a splashback, but I would prefer to do it anyway to be safe. In chatting with the tiler he’s recommended priming the plasterboard then going over with waterproof membrane. Just hoping to get some advice on whether there’s any specific products I should use for those tasks.

thank you!

Re: How to waterproof splashback?

Hello @meeganw

Thanks for sharing your question about your splashback. I suggest using Crommelin 1L One Coat Rapid Under-Tile Waterproofing Membrane.  It is a premium heavy-duty liquid waterproofing membrane, its formulated to permanently waterproof wet areas prior to tiling. Please make sure to use Crommelin 1L Waterproofing Membrane Surface Primer on any freshly plastered surface. The primer must be totally dry before you apply the waterproofing.

My best advice is to cover your new kitchen with drop sheets to prevent splattering waterproofing on the cabinets and benchtop. Please make sure to give the waterproofing enough time to cure properly before tiling over it.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How to waterproof splashback?

Hi @MitchellMc and @EricL, I have another question re this one. The plasterboard that was put up turned out to be very wonky, so I engaged another plasterer to rectify it using hard plaster (I believe he used the 45 cornice cement).

I have tiling booked for Saturday (7 days after plastering) and don’t think I’ll have time to do the full waterproofing. If I were to just prime the surface instead pre-tiling, would that be sufficient? And if so, what product would be suitable? Thank you!

Re: How to waterproof splashback?

Hi @meeganw,

If you are skipping the waterproofing route, I suggest using Davco 1L Ultraprime Surface Primer to seal up the plaster. Please make sure to inform your tiler that you have sealed the plaster with the Ultraprime. In this manner they will not have to apply another product on the surface of your plaster wall.

If you need further assistance, please let me know.
