How to stain a Kaboodle benchtop?

IMG_8173.jpeg

Would love to know if it’s possible to stain a smoked oak Kaboodle benchtop to a different colour? Our floors are blackbutt and it’s a total clash. Builder installed while we were away and it was the wrong timber! Are we better replacing or is there a way to stain it a warmer colour ? Given the Benchtop and island bench are already installed appreciate advice that takes this into account.

Re: Help! Canyou stain a Kaboodle benchtop ?

Hello @joani

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about staining your Kaboodle benchtop.

In order to properly stain the benchtop, it will need to be sanded down. This process will produce a lot of sanding dust and will go over your entire kitchen area. It would be best to uninstall the benchtop and sand it outside. Is it possible to stain the Smoked Oak to the same colour as your floor? It is possible to stain the timber benchtop, but because of its dark profile the stain might make the benchtop finish darker. If it was a lighter coloured benchtop, it might have been possible to get close to the colour of the floor.

You could try staining a small portion of your benchtop to see what the results would be and to find out if you can get close to the tone of the floor. But if staining does not work and time is a factor. I can only suggest changing the benchtop to the colour that you prefer.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Help! Canyou stain a Kaboodle benchtop ?

Thanks Eric! That is super helpful… I’m just wondering which product would be best for staining a benchtop e.g. food safe? Could you recommend one? I will give it a go on the spare timber 1st to see if it works to a good colour result and then uninstall the Benchtops and sand and stain. Would you then suggest the caboodle wax oil over the top ? Depending on costs of above products and time involved we will look at simply replacing as an alternative

Re: Help! Canyou stain a Kaboodle benchtop ?

Hi @joani,

I just wanted to follow up on my colleague's response. Up until a few weeks ago, I, too, was under the assumption that all Kaboodle benchtops were solid timber, which could be sanded and restained. It's come to our attention that most are actually laminate benchtops, which can't be sanded or stained. You'll notice in the description of the Kaboodle 2400 x 900 x 38mm Smoked Oak Benchtop it states that it is a laminate benchtop.

Due to this, you are unable to stain them in a different colour.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
