Hello community, I have an old kitchen backsplash (I think it’s ceramic or stone if anyone can from the photos). Looking for a step by step guide to re-vamp the backsplash on a budget (will reno kitchen in a few years) but for now, I hate the colour of the backsplash.
Worthy to note, backsplash is old and thick (see photo) and there is also a gap between the counter top and backsplash slab, see photos. I can imagine there is multiple ways to approach it, but something cheap and DIY friendly would be great.

One option is to remove the existing stone tiles and retile the area, but since you’re planning a full kitchen reno in a few years, a quicker and more budget-friendly approach would be to tile directly over the existing backsplash.
If you go this route, I’d recommend using Dunlop 20kg Mastic Tile Adhesive and priming the surface first with Dunlop 4L Multipurpose Primer to ensure good adhesion. If the existing tiles have a glossy or glazed finish, it’s worth roughing them up with 120-grit sandpaper before priming. This will help the new tiles bond better to the surface.
For the gap between the countertop and backsplash, you could use a flexible silicone to seal it before tiling, or install a trim piece if needed for a cleaner finish.

The other option you might like to consider is installing a panel splashback and we have plenty of options on the Bunnings website to choose from. Once again, they can be installed over the existing tiles, which will save effort and expense.
