How to paint pantry shelves?

Hello,

We have just purchased an older home in need of a glow up. We're reasonably experienced, but we're a little unsure on the best paint for the kitchen pantry shelves.

They are a study MDF (not particle board, no laminate). We've sugar soaped and sanded to prep. We want a quality paint that is hardy and easy to wipe. Currently have plenty of Dulux Aquanamel but want to make sure this is the best product for the bljob before we proceed.

Any advice?

Don't have pantry pics on my but this is the linen cupboard and it's a similar project. However, these shelves are thinner than the pantry.

Re: How to paint pantry shelves.

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @Jezzmindah. It's sensational to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about painting shelves.

It sounds like you're on the right track with your pantry shelf project, and the preparation you've done with sugar soap and sanding will ensure a good bond for the paint.

Dulux Aquanamel is actually a solid choice for your MDF pantry shelves. It’s a water-based enamel paint, which offers both durability and a smooth, wipeable finish—perfect for high-use areas like a pantry. It’s also low in odour and dries relatively quickly, which is a plus for indoor projects.

One thing to consider, especially in a pantry, is the potential wear and tear over time. If you’re storing heavier items with rough edges, like unglazed ceramic plates or mugs, there’s a chance the paint could get scratched or worn down. To prevent this, you might want to consider adding a drawer liner to protect the surface.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
