How to fix flaking tiled floor?

Hi everybody,

I just moved into a new place and what I initially thought were stone floors started flaking.

Now I'm not sure what kind of floors they are.

Can someone please tell me what kind of floors they are and how do I fix the flaking? (sealers?)

Thanks in advance!

Frank

Re: How to fix flaking tiled floor?

Hello @FrankA

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's magnificent to have you join us, and thanks for sharing your question about your flaking tiled floor.

This particular damage appears to be quite serious. The sealer that was used has come off and it looks like it's taken the surface finish off as well. Now there are a number of sealers to choose from, but in this instance, I suggest engaging the services of a professional floor sealing specialist. Generally, what would need to happen is that the old sealer would either be chemically or mechanically removed.

Once the sealer has been stripped then a new sealer is placed on top of the tiles. At this point putting a new sealer over the existing sealer is not recommended as the old one might continue peeling off.

Let me call on our experienced members @Dave-1 and @homeinmelbourne for their recommendation.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Re: How to fix flaking tiled floor?

Evening @FrankA

:surprised: Wow, I am looking over at my tiles trying to remember if I have ever seen any do the same. Are your tiles slate? Or are they look like slate?

Really I would be going along with what @EricL is saying to do. Anything that is starting to flake is going to keep on flaking 😕 no mater what you put over the top. (Says me who is covered in paint flakes from water blasting old flaking paint off bessa blocks lol ) I wouldn't want to start thinking of removing and coating until I find out why its done so and a tile place or as Eric says a professional floor sealing specialist would be my first call.

Would really like to find out what has caused it if you would let us know (once you find out

Definitely out of my realm of knowledge for now.

Dave
