Hey team,
There is a gap between the kitchen and the lounge with a measurement of 216x84 cm like a size of a big cupboard.
Any idea how to cover this economically and efficiently?
I attached a picture for ready reference too.
Thanks.
Hello @SyedJaffry
To efficiently and economically cover the 216x84 cm gap between your kitchen and lounge, you can build a lightweight frame using blue framing timber (70x35 mm) and cover it with plasterboard for a smooth and professional finish. Start by measuring the gap carefully and cutting the timber to size using a handsaw or circular saw. At the store, you’ll find Craftright Hand Saws or Ryobi Circular Saws that are perfect for this kind of work. Construct a rectangular frame that fits snugly into the gap, reinforcing it with cross-supports for stability, spaced approximately 60 cm apart.
Once the frame is complete, secure it to the surrounding walls using screws and brackets like the Zenith Angle Brackets, ensuring its level and firmly in place. If you are tiling over it, make sure to adjust the level of your frame so that you have space for the tiles. Use a spirit level to check alignment during installation, which will make plasterboard attachment easier. Next, attach plasterboard to the frame using plasterboard screws, ensuring that the boards are flush and well-secured. The store offers standard 10 mm plasterboard sheets that are lightweight and cost-effective.
For a smooth finish, apply Gyprock CSR 2.25kg Less Mess Multi-Purpose Joint Compound to the seams and screw heads using a plastering knife. After the compound dries, sand it down gently with fine-grit sandpaper until it’s smooth and ready for painting. If you want the new wall to blend seamlessly with the surrounding area, The store carries a range of affordable paints, such as Dulux Wash&Wear, which is ideal for interior spaces.
As an extra tip, if you want to use the gap for storage, consider incorporating recessed shelving or a niche before closing it up. Simply adjust the frame to include the desired compartments, which can be finished with MDF panels or plasterboard for a custom look. This way, you can make the most of the space while still creating a clean divider between your kitchen and lounge.
