Hi fellow members,
I am new to wood cutting, so my project is looking fairly daunting to me, but I will persevere.
I am trying to build few pantry cupboards 600mm (D) X 600mm (W) X 2200 (H) with 100mm skirting board.
I see there are pre-drilled 16mm X 595 (W) X 2400mm (H) melamine boards and 2200mmX600mm doors available from Bunnings.
Is my project possible using these boards?
Thanks in advance. AP
Hi @aparasher,
Thank you for your post and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.
It's certainly possible to use the CUSTOMpine 16 x 2400 x 595mm System 32 White Matt Particleboard Panels to create a pantry, but I question whether it is worthwhile when compared to a kit such as this Bedford 2000 x 600 x 600mm Cabinet or Kaboodle 600mm Tall Pantry Cabinet.
You would need to purchase 2 of the predrilled panels, then additional melamine to create a back, top, bottom and shelves.
You would then need to cut the shelves to size, apply White Melamine Edge Tape to any of the exposed ends, predrill and finally screw it all together using 20mm Chipboard Screws.
Once the carcass is together, you would need to predrill, rebate and attach hinges to the 600mm Pantry Door using a Concealed Hinge Jig to ensure the hinges operate as intended.
You would then need to attach and adjust the doors to fit the opening, install the door handles and then install the shelving.
I don't want to discourage you as it is certainly possible, but when the cost of the materials, the tools required, the time and the frustration is weighed up with buying a kit that is prefinished and simply requires assembly, it might be a better option to go with the kit.
Let me know what you think and if you'd like to proceed, let me know any other questions you have, I'd be more than happy to point you in the right direction.
Jacob
Hi Jacob,
Thank you so very much for your detailed information. You are correct that using pre-cut kits would be ideal. I want to align the cabinets with existing ones which are 2300mm high and both options of Bradford and Kaboodle are shorter than that. Luckily the pre-drilled panels from Bunnings are close the rlmy required height and are have the edges taped. This means that I could build the carcass and doors with minimal effort leaving the main effort for installation process.
Let's see how it goes. Wish me luck and I will keep you posted.
Thanks
