How to add storage and preparation space to a small kitchen?

Hi all

We have a rather small kitchen thats needs updating. Its only  2.3m x 2.8m wide. As you can see there isnt much storage or prep space once you put in other appliances. We would like to have an appliance storage but i am guessing it might be impossible.

Is there anything in the kaboodle range that might work?

Re: How to add storage and preparation space to a small kitchen?

Hello @RubenR

Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community. It's sensational to have you join us and thanks for sharing your question about adding storage and prep space to your kitchen.

The kitchen size of 2.3mx2.8m is not very large, is there an area where a dinner table might be located after the kitchen or is it just a hallway? If there is space for a table, can you please include that measurement. Can I also please ask for a photo of the kitchen with that extra space for a dinner table included.

Are you planning on replacing all the cabinetry or just a few cabinets? You could install a four-door pantry, and one portion can serve as an appliance nook. Another option is to give up some wall cabinet space and install your microwave up top and have an open cabinet to the right of it for the kettle and toaster. Once you give us more details about your plan, we'll be able to make recommendations on how you can reformat your kitchen.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric

Hi Eric thank you for the reply. There is some place. As in the image we have to pass thru the area to go to the bedroom on the left (where the laundry is) and the living area to the right. I am not sure if a 4 door pantry would be possible?

Did i mention i really dislike the corner cabinets. They are such a pain to store and retrieve items

Re: How to add storage and preparation space to a small kitchen?

Hi @RubenR,

It's certainly a tough one because you don't have much space for additions. You could add wall hung cabinets to the right wall above the stove, however, this might not be ideal if you are planning other changes.

A microwave certainly takes up a lot of counter space, so adding a microwave box is a great start.

Was the plan to remove and replace all existing cabinets? Or just a few? Or simply add more cabinets?

Let me know what you think

We should be looking at a full replacement. The backsplash and counter tops are painted with some waterproof glossy paint. Its starting to come off the counter tops.

I contacted Bunnings to get a home assessment done but its been a few days and not heard back from anyone.

Hi @RubenR,

If you haven't heard back from the store, feel free to contact the Kitchen Expert and request an update. Alternatively, if you can let me know the store, I can phone them to check on when they might get back to you.

Re: How to add storage and preparation space to a small kitchen?

Hello @RubenR

I'm glad you got the call from the Kitchen Expert. I've drawn up a sample idea for you to look at. I've maximised your wall cabinets and have taken your pantry out of the equation so that you can get maximum benchtop use. Now that space is still technically still there, and I've moved it down into standard base cabinets. I propose using   Kaboodle 450mm Soft Close Pullout Basket for each side and a Kaboodle 2 Tier Blind Corner Soft Close Pullout Baskets for the blind corner cabinet near the cooktop.

I've placed the microwave up at the top and have built you a custom table that serves as prep area and as dinner table. Please feel free to show this to the Kitchen designer so that you can get their feedback.

If you have any other questions we can help with, please let us know.

Eric
