Renovating our kitchen was the first step in making our "matchbox" of a home livable for our large food-driven, home-cooking, tea with jam, and bread-singing family.
Enclosing the back veranda and removing a wall, we transformed our one small cabinet-ed wall with a sink into a family-sized country kitchen, exposing roof rafters, recycling a tip-destined solid wood kitchen, and using bathroom tiles for a splash-back.

We started by weatherproofing the back veranda, properly enclosing the area, plastering and painting the walls, and trying to match the floors with the existing house.
Staining the rafters with walnut tint and three coats of varnish made them stand out against the crisp white ceiling.
Finishing the painting of the walls and ceiling first allowed us to spill all the paint we wanted—the floor had not been laid yet!
We then laid the hardwood floor and played with different colour tints to match the floor in the house.
We used a sander to help make them look the same age.
After installing the recycled timber kitchen we used the leftover floorboards to make a new bench top, ,staining it a darker colour than the floor and using the same varnish.
We decorated using oak timber shelving, various trims, and certain rods for pots and pan hooks.
Our Kitchen is officially complete!
PS: Trojan Multigrip pliers make for great Walnut Crackers!
Looks great. Very rustic country.
