Can you sand back prestained Bunnings kitchen benchtops?
hi there
we have existing bunnings timber bench tops which are pre-stained a dark colour. I would like to know if it’s possible to sand these back to stain a lighter colour?

Re: Prestained Bunnings Kitchen Benchtops
Welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community @lcam2094. It's wonderful to have you join us, and many thanks for your question about sanding timber benchtops.
Were you able to let our helpful members know exactly which benchtop you had and perhaps post some images of it? Let me know if you need a hand uploading some pictures.
The ability to sand the bench back and apply a lighter shade stain really comes down to how far the current stain has penetrated. If it's only in the top fractions of a millimetre, then that would be easy to sand back, but removing it might not be an option if it has penetrated deeply into the surface. Unfortunately, even if we knew the exact benchtop you have, I'm not sure if the supplier will be able to give us an exact answer as to whether sanding out the stain will be possible. You'll have to do a test section on an inconspicuous area, perhaps underneath, to determine how much timber will be removed to strip the stain.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
