How to make a flower pot tower

A flower pot tower is an easy way to grow flowers and herbs, especially in compact spaces like balconies or small gardens. It can also work as a stylish outdoor feature. Building a flower pot tower is a great D.I.Y. project for kids to grow their interest in gardening.

Here is a simple step-by-step guide to building a three-tiered flower pot tower. You can follow the pot sizes mentioned in this guide or use different ones to suit your needs.

Steps

Step 1

Select your preferred pots.

A three-tiered tower needs five pots in total. Three large pots are visible and the other two smaller ones are inverted and hidden inside the larger pots.

Here are the diameters of the pots I chose:

• Base pot: 33cm
  
  
• First inverted pot: 23cm
  
  
• Second pot: 27cm
  
  
• Second inverted pot: 17cm
  
  
• Third pot: 21cm.

Step 2

Construct the tower’s second tier.

Place all the pots upside down with their bases upturned. Make sure all bases are clean and dry.

Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive on the base of the pot measuring 23cm. Then turn it upside down so the base is facing downwards. Position this pot on the base of the upturned 27cm pot. Make sure the drainage holes are aligned.

Now press firmly to glue the two pots together. If any adhesive leaks from the sides, wipe it off with a damp cloth while still wet.

Allow the pots to sit until the adhesive is dry.

Step 3

Construct the tower’s third tier.

Apply a generous amount of construction adhesive to the base of the pot measuring 17cm. Turn it upside down so the base is facing downwards. Position it on the base of the 21cm upturned pot.

Press firmly and then allow the glue to set as in Step 2.

You should now have two separate tiers of the tower.

Step 4

Position the tiers in place.

Determine the location of your pot tower. Place the 33cm pot on your preferred spot. Ensure it is level.

Place the glued 23cm and 27cm pots in the 33cm pot, with the 27cm pot facing upwards.

Fill the sides with potting mix to stabilise the glued pots. It’s a good idea to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) like gloves while handling the potting mix. Do not press the mix down too firmly. Ensure it is free of air pockets.

Now insert the glued 17cm and 21cm pots in the 27cm pot, with the 21cm pot facing upwards. If these pots don’t sit at your required height, you can add more potting mix to the base of the 27cm pot.

Finally, add mix to the sides of the glued pots and inside the 21cm pot.

  

Step 5

Add plants in your tower.

You can now add your preferred plants in the tower. You may have to remove some of the potting mix added in the previous step to make room for the plants.

I added miniature Chrysanthemums in the bottom two tiers and a Kalanchoe at the top along with cascading Dichondra Silver Falls.

Water your tower well. Add in a tonic like Seasol. Refer to the product label for instructions on how to use the tonic.

Your flower pot tower is now ready.

• 33cm terracotta pot
• 23cm terracotta pot
• 27cm terracotta pot
• 17cm terracotta pot
• 21cm terracotta pot
• Landscape grade construction adhesive
• Potting mix
• Your preferred plants
• Seasol.

Tools

• Caulking gun
• Watering can
• Safety gear, including gloves.
