Will paint leach into a raised garden bed?

My husband has used 2 products I am unsure of in my raised organic vegetable gardens.

The frame is for an insect screen cover.

He has used KILLRUST to prime a timber and metal frame , this has then been top coated with Taubmans Weathershield paint.

One base layer of the frame is made of Hardie plank. also painted in both products

The frame rests on the soil inside the garden bed, therefore it get wet from the reticulation and rain.

Will this leach any harmful chemical into the soil.

I  hope you can help with an answer.

Re: Will paint leach into a raised garden bed?

Hi @jeteagle,

Just to clarify, are you using the Taubmans Sunproof or Taubmans All Weather? The Sunproof is perfectly safe for use, and in fact, you can collect drinking water from it. On the other hand, the All Weather contains additional preservatives and is not recommended for use where drinking water is collected. While it's unlikely to affect your plants, it's not tested for drinking water purposes or considered food-safe.

Another point to consider is that Sunproof isn't a chemical barrier, meaning it doesn't prevent any underlying coatings from penetrating through. It would be a good idea to check with the manufacturer of Killrust to see if there are any concerns with their product for your project. Since Killrust isn't one we supply, I can't confirm its compatibility.

If you've used the All Weather, just let me know, and we can discuss further.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Re: Will paint leach into a raised garden bed?

Hi Mitchel thanks for your reply

The paint is Taubmans All Weather, we haven't actually painted it yet so I could change products.

I do need it to seal the primer underneath to avoid any leakage.

Thanks again

Re: Will paint leach into a raised garden bed?

Hi @jeteagle

If you've not painted it yet, I suggest using Taubmans Sunproof. But as Mitchell has mentioned, it's a good idea to check with the manufacturer of Killrust to see if there are any concerns with their product leaching.

If you need further assistance, please let us know.

Re: Will paint leach into a raised garden bed?

Hi all

FYI  Killrust have informed me that their product will not leach any chemical once it has totally dried.  It had been on the timber and steel frame for at least 2 weeks before i coated it.

Hardie have advised their product is also completely safe.

I have now painted the frame in Taubmans Sunproof as advised and I thank you for all of your help and advice.

I intend to do a soil test in a few months just to confirm that there is no leaching into the soil.

Once again thank you for all of your help.
