Hi there, I have recently created a garden using the Bunnings SpecRite Merbau rolled edging. It looks great but poses a bit of a problem when mowing the lawn. I’ve had to put 3 coats of oil on this edging prior to installing; has anyone used a whippersnipper near edging like this? I’m concerned it will damage it Thanks in advance for any help provided.
Afternoon @Jill7
That is a lovely garden - congrats. Love the rocks.
Mine is less lovely and I have painted treated pine sleepers as borders.
My two-stroke whipper - if I'm not careful - will strip the paint off back to the wood.
I'm assuming the Merabu would be a lot tougher?
Thanks @Noyade! I think the Merbau is reasonably tough but I’m just a bit worried it’ll damage the oiled finish/scratch it. Might have to do a test spot where it’s not too conspicuous. Thanks
Hi @Jill7,
Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you join us.
Might I congratulate you on the absolutely fantastic job you have done with this garden edge. I completely understand your concern about using a whipper snipper against it.
The truth is, that whipper snippers will damage the edging slightly. It is certainly possible, with caution, to avoid hitting the edging, but if the trimmer line hits the timber, it will leave marks.
Unfortunately, this is likely unavoidable if you are to use a whipper snipper to handle the grass that is close to the edging. If you wanted to avoid this, you could use Fiskars SP15 Solid Pruning Shears along the edging and use the whipper snipper for the other areas.
Let me know if you have any further questions.
Jacob
Hi @JacobZ, thank you for the response and the suggestion of the shears. I think I’ll give them a go; I’d be sad to damage the edging. Cheers, Jill
