What plants for a deep planter box mostly in shade?

Hi everyone,

I just wonder what kind of plants are good to grow in this deep planter box. Most of the time, it's shady, except a bit of afternoon sunshine during the summer.

Thank you!

Re: What plants are good for this area

Depends where you live State wise.  I am in Brisbane and even though my garden bed in in dappled shade it is still exposed to the outside heat which is perfect at the moment for Turmeric and other herbs.

Hi @luxiliu,

Thank you for your question.

As @Qldgarden has mentioned, the state you are in, and more specifically the climate, will often determine the best choice of plants for your space.

Are you looking for colour and aesthetics? Or edible plants? Maybe a combination of the two?

There is a massive variety of options, so if we can narrow down what you are looking for, I'll happily make some recommendations.

For some general advice, have a look at Need plant suggestions for new garden beds and Need ideas for plants for garden bed where a number of options are recommended.

Let me know what you think.

Re: What plants are good for this area

Thank you @Qldgarden and @JacobZ for your replies.

I'm in an eastern suburb of Melbourne. I previously planted gardenias and ferns here, but they died quickly. I've now laid down a weed barrier and then added a layer of mulch. I’m thinking of some evergreen plants, like English box, but I’m not sure if they’re suitable.

There's another problem—what's a cheap way to fill such a deep area?

Re: What plants are good for this area

Hi @luxiliu,

So sorry for the delay in my reply.

You'll want to choose plants that can tolerate the cooler, more temperate climate while thriving in the shady conditions of your planter box. Since you've had some trouble with gardenias and ferns in the past, it could be related to their sensitivity to the dry, shaded conditions or perhaps the drainage of the planter box.

Evergreen plants like English box (Buxus sempervirens) could work well for structure, but it's essential to ensure that the planter has proper drainage and the soil doesn't stay too wet, as that could cause root rot. If you're considering low-maintenance, hardy plants, you might also look at varieties like Liriope (border grass), Hostas, or Camellias (they love shade and provide a lovely evergreen touch).

As for filling the deep area, one option would be to use a mix of quality garden soil and a cheaper filler soil. You could also layer mulch on top, which helps retain moisture, reduce weeds, and add a natural aesthetic.

Please let me know if you have any questions.

Mitchell
