I assume we have have barley grass (grass seeds) in the back lawn.
I hate it so much, as it gets in the dogs paws, ears etc.
Is there a safe, fast way to kill the grass but not hurt the dogs? They sometimes munch on the grass.

I suggest having a quick look at this discussion - Is weed killer safe for pets? by @TriciaW. There was reference to the Yates 1L Ready To Use Zero Rapid 1 Hour Action Weed Killer and the Seasol 3L EarthCare Organic Weedkiller. The conditions for them to become pet and child safe is to stay out of the area until it is totally dry.
