What caused this hole in garden bed?

Hi. We are in a new build and our garden was done around 6 weeks ago.  I have just found this hole and a bit worried what it might be. I’m at Morphettville SA.  Any ideas?  It’s around 2-2.5cm. It does appear to go deeper.

Re: Hole in garden bed.

Hi @Bandick,

Thank you for your question and welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it is fantastic to have you with us.

It's possible that due to the age of your garden bed, this hole is simply due to settlement in the soil, however, the light dusting of sand around the hole could mean something has dug the hole such as a small rodent, snake, spider or beetle.

I don't think at this point it is a particular cause for concern, but you may want to monitor it to see if something is coming in and out of the hole. You could check the hole at different times during the day or set up a Wildlife Trail Camera to monitor the hole.

If you're particularly concerned, it may be worth contacting a pest control specialist for their assessment and assistance.

Allow me to tag some of our helpful members to see if they have any thoughts, @Dave-1, @Noelle, @Nailbag, @robchin.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Jacob

Re: Hole in garden bed.

Hi @Bandick

I agree with @JacobZ that this looks like a small rodent burrow. To know if it's active, place a thin layer of soil over it and see if it reoccurs. If so then contact a local pest control specialist for their assessment.

Morning @Bandick

I was thinking "spider hole" but then after reading @Nailbag's suggestion I looked closer at the pattern of the sand away from the hole. Something was going for a snack id say
