Vertical garden using Pine and lattice

Vertical garden using Pine and lattice

A vertical garden I created to make more space for plants in my tiny townhouse yard.

I don't have much DIY experience but the end result has given me a garden I can reach, safe away from my pets as well.

Materials

I used the following

Hardwood Lattice 2400x600mm I/N 0154531)

Angle Brackets (I/N 0044065)

Treated Pine (I/N 8032105)

Screws

Planters (I/N 2941000)

Tools

Hand saw

Measuring tape

Pencil

Impact drill

Drill driver

(I didn't use one but a spirit level would work well for this project)

Steps

Step 1

I measured the space on the fence I wanted my screens to hang from, checking distance from rail to rail and post to post so that I could choose screens that would fit.

Step 2

I measured and cut some treated pine to mount to my fence.

Each side had to be measured separately to ensure they fit as the fence had slight bowing in the rails.

Step 3

I fixed pine in place with the brackets, screwing into the rails and not the pailings.

This was extra framing my screens could be screwed onto (as the screens I picked were too narrow to reach both rails and needed support)

Step 4

Pre-drill holes in the screen that the screws can be driven through.

I chose each corner as well as at least one in top middle and bottom middle.

Step 5

I had help to hold the screen up to where I wanted it mounted and I drilled screws through the screen to attach to fence rails and pine frames.

(Fixing one loosely at the top middle first let me straighten the frame to my liking before finishing and moving on to the corners)

Step 6

Last step is to chose pots and plants.

I wanted pots that would hook over the lattice so that it would make it easier to re-pot or reposition whenever I liked.

If I did again I would chose pots with narrower hooks.

Re: Vertical Garden

Hi @SarahH,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community, it's fantastic to have you with us.

This is an absolutely fantastic project that turns an otherwise uninteresting fence into a wonderfully usable growing space.

Thank you so much for sharing this project with us.

@SarahH

Awesome work.  You can never go wrong planting herbs.

Thank you for sharing, it must be difficult being so very limited in space to grow things. With loads of people in similar situations, this is certainly something that will be popular.

I'm in the process of starting all over again/downsizing, and the place we have purchased has no gardens at all.  So loads of hard work getting things done on my solo, BUT one thing I managed to take with me in the move is a big old double concrete laundry sink.  My next job is to get some good soil and go from there.  I planted seeds last month which are close to being ready to be planted. As well as having loads of vegie seeds come up from some of my home made compost. Around a dozen tomato plants, pumpkins and even the odd potato, have come up from my home made compost.

I will certainly putting them all to good use, hoping they survive our stinkin hot summer..  Even though I am not sure of which variety or each of the self grown varieties of tomato and pumpkins I have, they are all free, so I will give them a go.

All the best with your herb garden..
