Re: pebble or mulch ?
Good Evening @veronica50
I would like to offer a warm welcome to the Bunnings community pages You have hit the righ place for these types of questions for sure!
I am not a huge fan of pebbles mainly because if you have to ever remove them then its shovel and sift and more shovel and sift (had a whole garden bed 3m by 12m that I sifted for pebbles and a weedy plant. So I think of it as huge future effort.
Mulch, much prefer this, it breaks down in a year or so and will need to be refreshed. But its adding to the gardens health no matter what. I have contacted my local tree loppers (arborists ) and asked how much a load of tree mulch would cost. It worked well for me and I wasnt worried about the freshness of the chips. A deep mulch over a thinner mulch will help keep weeds away but with either pebbles or mulch you will still get weeds striving for the sun 😕
Weed mat under the pebbles or mulch. I prefer not to use a mat. I have used several different types of weed mat for my tomatoes over the years and only ex coffee hessian bags have really held up and they still had some weeds grown through them. I am very reluctant to use a plastic based weed mat as why add plastic to my garden. I would just add the price of the weed mat and put it towards a deeper mulch or pebbles
Last idea. How about a cross between the two? Make an curved edged path with pebbles and then mulch the either side of the edge? A bit of both worlds under that tree and it would look spectacular!
In case you want to have a go at repairing your lawn

Re: pebble or mulch ?
Dave ,
Really appreciate your input and great idea about combining the 2 mulch and pebbles. So you mean pebble around the tree and mulch as lawn ?
what are your thoughts about ground covers acting as lawn to obtain some green ?

Re: pebble or mulch ?
Good Morning @veronica50
I was thinking for the area beside the tree that has died off was where you were refering.
Green = mulch
Blue = Hard edging
White = white pebbles
This is what I was thinking of with that area of the grass that has died back

Re: pebble or mulch ?
Morning Dave ..
Food for thought and than mulching the whole way and getting rid of the front lawn ? What about ground covers instead would that be low maintenance?

Re: pebble or mulch ?
Morning @veronica50
I "dislike" mowing so groundcovers would be great, I would mulch and then plant out ground covers within it. I dont think I would do your whole yard at once but work in areas and gradually bring them together if you like how its going. I started building berms and flower beds and then realised they are hard to maintain so have been thinking of low maintence ground covers (your local bunnings will stock local varieties more so)
Break your yard down in to "servere", "more servere" and "most servere" Treat themseperatly and then work to bring them together, modify as you see the growth pattern change how it looks. I never think of a yard as "done" its always under construction
Take a bunch of photos, sketch out your paths and mulch and then add your groundcover. Remember that the tree and establish plans have roots that you dont want to disturb. Think of the tree and shrubs as big umbrellas. I wouldnt be doing anything to the underneath area of those.
It would be a nice project to post And will take some time to layout and grow it in.

Re: pebble or mulch ?
Morning Dave,
Very useful ideas you have given me .. much appreciated... I just want something low maintenance and the grass is looking very tired...I quite like the combination of the two materials with rock and mulch...With the mulch, would you extend it to the whole front lawn to your left green sketches extending it just in front of the ivy whereby I am removing all of the lawn? Or do you think I should keep part of the lawn and just do the small part mulch n stones as your sketch ?
Cheers,
veronica.

Re: pebble or mulch ?
Afternoon @veronica50
I would leave the grass for now, if you decide you like what you have done then its onto stage 2 Otherwise the green of the grass will help make the place feel more relaxing I would think.
