Need help with plant herbs and veggies

1.Hi, I'm new in gardening and still learning to grow veggies. We have this existing garden bed which have soil mix of sandy texture. I'm planning to grow herbs, tomatoes, cucumbers. But it's long enough not much wider. Can we grow in that space?

2. It have soil of sandy texture - can we plant veggies straight away or need to add compost or anything else?20241228_162959.jpg

Re: Need help with plant herbs and veggies

Hi @sau1,

A warm welcome to the Bunnings Workshop community and thank you for your question.

While the garden bed is fairly narrow, there are certainly options.

In a narrow garden bed, you can grow compact or vertical vegetables like lettuce and spinach, which are great for continuous harvesting. Slim, upright crops such as spring onions and leeks are also ideal while climbing beans and peas make excellent use of vertical space. Compact plants like chillis and capsicums offer productive yields, and herbs like basil, parsley, and chives fit well into tight spaces.

To give your veggie garden the best start possible, I'd suggest mixing some compost into the soil. Use a hand fork to mix through a few bags of high-quality compost such as this Osmocote Scotts Compost Premium Soil Improver. This will improve the soil quality, encourage beneficial insects and microbial growth and give your veggies some nutrients that will help them thrive.

Let me know if you have any further questions.

Re: Need help with plant herbs and veggies

Thanks @JacobZ  for detailed information.

I have few queries if would be able to help, that would be great:

1. I have bought the compost mentioned, but not sure how much need to be mixed. Dimensions for bed are 980cm, 26cm, 32cm(L,D,H).

2. And do I need to leave for specific timeframe after mixing compost?

Thanks!
